Packing for International Travel

Packing for International Travel

In my opinion, nothing is more exciting then when you finally purchase a flight to an international destination! I always have a rush of excitement, and then shortly after that —momentary panic-  when I realize I have to pack for my trip!

Over the years I have put together a packing cheat sheet that I use to start the packing process. I hope you will be able to use this list to help you feel and look your best when traveling.

Hard Carry Travel Suitcase:

  • Invest in a lightweight and long-lasting suitcase. Make sure it has spinner wheels for easy and quick mobility. The interior should be roomy and exterior durable.

Choose Appropriate Clothes:

  • Depending on the time of year and activities you have planned, invest in wrinkle-free and light weight clothing you can layer. Make sure to select clothing with a balance of function and style as it is important to have options and that you feel your best. I love to check the weather to get the average temperature for the city I will be visiting to plan outfits.

Sunglasses and Sun Protection:

  • I wear sunscreen everyday but if you are traveling to a beach or sunny destination I recommend bringing a tube of your favorite sunscreen.  I have found if I purchase one last minute, they are usually overpriced (up to 5x at some resorts!) greasy, and pore clogging versions.

Travel Pouches/ Packing Cubes:

  • Remember to bring a few pouches in various sizes and colors to help organize misc items in your suitcase. It helps to maximize your suitcase and organize your luggage by outfit. You can also just bring one or two (pouches) to help split out clean and dirty clothes. I also love a small and compact jewelry case designed to hold one or two necklaces and a few rings.

Mini Umbrella:

  • It is hard to plan for the unexpected rain shower. (When I backpacked through Spain- it literally rained every afternoon). A mini umbrella is the perfect compact accessory to keep on hand and will ensure you will stay dry wherever your destination.

Snacks:

  • Airport food tends to be limited in options, so I prefer to bring a few small snacks with me when I travel. Look for items that are non-perishable or easy to travel with like granola bars, trail mix, or an apple with almond butter. While you can not bring liquids through security, I like to bring an empty collapsable water bottle to refill.

Sneakers:

  • Extremely practical to wear when traveling. Make sure you pick a shoe that is durable and supportive so that you are able to explore as much as possible on foot. I recently purchased Cole Haan ZERØGRAND sneakers, and they have proved to be a blend of both comfort and style.

Lavender Sachets:

  • I know this is extra…but Lavender sachets are a wonderful way to add an extra layer of luxury to your suitcase. I try to keep clean and dirty clothes separate so as the clean clothes do not take on the oder of the dirty ones. The sachets are a wonderful option while traveling and keep your clothes fragrant.

Prescription and Over-the-Counter Medication:

  • These items should always be packed in your carry-on in the event that you need immediate access. TSA recommends that medication be clearly labeled to facilitate the screening process, I have even heard its good to bring a typed medication list & original packaging as some states have individual laws regarding the required labeling of prescription medication.

PRO TIP: For the most up-to-date information on items permitted in your carry-on and checked baggage visit: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all

Portable Power Bank/ Charger:

  • During our travels, we need our phones to act as our camera, navigation, and entertainment, and never want to fall victim to a powerless cell phone. A power bank will provide multiple full phone charges, and is small and slim enough to fit anywhere.

PRO TIP: Be sure to bring your iPhone charging cable, too. Most portable chargers only come with a tiny USB cable.

Ear Plugs:

  • For both the flight or when you sleep. These are a life saver, when you find out that certain old air conditioning units rattle or neighbors are loud. Ear plugs saved my life in Florence, Italy when our Airbnb was over a late night club- that didn’t exactly work with my 5AM wake up. I would not have been able to sleep through it without earplugs.

Crossbody Bag with Zipper:

  • One of the most important items to invest in before you travel is your purse, because you will use it everyday. You need it to be able to carry everything you need, be comfortable to carry all day, and have a zipper (or anti-theft features) so you help prevent against pickpockets.

Noise Canceling Headphones:

  • There are a ton of options nowadays including bluetooth, wired, wireless, and over- the-ear versions. These are an investment, but are a game-changer on flights. They truly cancel out all the ambient noise and allow me to play music at a very soft level. I use the Bose QuietComfort 20 Noise-canceling Earbuds.

PRO TIP: Make sure you bring your headphone dongle so you can plug into the plan’s 3.5mm jack.

Mini First Aid Kit:

  • This is a personal preference, but accidents and sickness do occur on the road. If you travel enough, I recommend putting together or purchasing a small kit to help prevent an unnecessary stops to a pharmacy. I also try and include mini versions of bug spray, antidiarrheal, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes and pain reliever along with Moleskin, Neosporin, and Bandaids for blisters.

Universal Power Adapter:

  • Select a charger that is small, has the ability to accept multiple devices at once and provides a quick powerful recharge. If traveling abroad, make sure that the charger will support different outlet types as needed, and research online to make sure that an adapter is actually necessary where you are going next.

Mini Bluetooth Speaker:

  • Portable and small in size, but delivers in sound quality. Stream your favorite music or local radio station.
